Montezemolo: "In 2018 Hamilton would have won with Ferrari"
The former president of Ferrari has spared no compliments on the sixth world title won by the British driver
The world title conquered by Lewis Hamilton in Austin, the sixth of his career, has completed the domination of the Mercedes on Formula 1 from 2014 to today, with 12 world titles won in six years. A roster that has surpassed even the golden years of the 'trio' Todt-Schumacher-Brawn Ferrari, stopped at 11. President of that triumphal era was Luca Cordero di Montezemolo who, speaking on the microphones of Radio Rai , sported celebrated the results of the Brackley team.
" They are a very strong team , they knew how to manage the pilots well and they never had reliability problems - acknowledged the former number one of Maranello - we hope that this is the last one and that it will then resume a Ferrari cycle ". Montezemolo then made a parallel between Austin's starred double and his Ferrari at Monza in 1975 , when he was in charge of the Squadra Corse: “ Seeing the Austin podium, I came back to mind the images of Monza, when with one pilot, Clay Ragazzoni, we won the GP, and with the other, Niki Lauda, two races before the end, won the world championship. It was the first time when, talking to Ferrari, I felt him moved ” .
The speech then moved to the main protagonist of these years, Lewis Hamilton. The Englishman is only one step away from the record of Michael Schumacher's titles and Montezemolo did not fail to pay tribute to him: “ Hamilton is a great player . I think his victory is very pleasing to my friend Niki Lauda who will be very satisfied from there, having done everything to bring him to Mercedes. I admire three things about Lewis - highlighted Montezemolo -first the behavior, because it is a person who in the race and outside always has a very sporting attitude. Then the extraordinary ability to regulate his race according to the needs of each circuit. He is a very fast driver who knows how to use the car and tires intelligently. A great at bringing home the results. Finally I would say that the six world titles speak for themselves: we are talking about a pilot who enters the Formula 1 legend . He won even in conditions in which he did not, like for example last year, arrange the best car " .
And just in 2018 Montezemolo did not fail to indirectly pull a whip to Sebastian Vettel, joining the ranks of those who believe that Hamilton would have brought Cavallino to success with inverted cars : " I think if Hamilton had driven Ferrari last year he would have won with Ferrari. This is my opinion - he said, then drawing up a sort of ranking of the strongest pilots ever - starting from Fangio, I would certainly put it at the level, in modern times, of Lauda, logically of Michael, indeed first of all of Michael, of Senna, of Jim Clark, of Stewart, of the great ones of the F1. [Hamilton] He is a pilot who, due to his personal qualities, would have been very happy to have in the team " ex-Ferrari boss concluded.
