Ferrari completes analysis of failed DRS

Following Fernando Alonso's problems with DRS during the Bahrain GP, Ferrari engineers went on to investigate the problem the deprived the Spaniard of a possible podium. Team principal Stefano Domenicali does however not lose his courage for what is to come next.

Analysis revealed that the problem was caused by the breakage of a mechanical component within the system. It’s the first problem of its kind on this system seen in the three years during which it has been used. Ferrari stated the failure is not something that causes concern for the long term but notes that reliability will remain one of its most important points of focus.

“It’s hard to recall a race where so many things went wrong,” commented Stefano Domenicali back at Maranello. “The DRS failure prevented Fernando, who yet again produced a great performance, from fighting Vettel for the win. Then for Felipe, there were the two tyre related problems that pushed him out of the points and prevented from getting the top five finish that was within his grasp. We had the potential to get these results, but we were unable to do so, partly because of external influences.”

Responsibility therefore lies with reliability, from the smallest to the biggest components, to ensure the level of perfection that has to be the standard for Ferrari. “We must work with renewed attention on this front,” continued Domenicali. “We must also continue to develop the car and increase our understanding of the tyres, which is more crucial than ever this year. In these first four races of the season, we have not managed, for various reasons, to bring home the points that were within our grasp. That’s why the gap to the top in both classifications seems quite large, but we must not be discouraged by this, quite the contrary, because we have seen so often, both in our favour and against, how things can change in a hurry. We believe in our ability to be in the fight for the titles right to the end and this time, we have been in that fight since the start, which has not been the case for a while. At the same time, we must be aware that in order to achieve our objectives, we have to be perfect in every area.”

Simone Resta - nešto kao da će se dosta posvetiti samim kvalifikacijama jer bolje pozicije nose bolje šanse, dotaknuo se guma i sve nešto u tome tarkelja...do sada je Ferrari bio na kvalama 4,5-2,3-3,5-3,6 pa ja osobno ne vidim baš koliko se to mogu još popraviti eventulano da stalno uzimaju 1,2 ili eventualno 1,3. A uspoređivati prošlu i ovu sezonu kvalifikacija je nepotrebno jer je svaki rezultat bolji od 9-og mjesta bio uspjeh tada. No 'ajde lijepo je da se pokušaju stalno poboljšati bez obzira na sav svoj besmisao postojanja.

Ferrari: Organisational changes paying off


Ferrari’s chief designer Nikolas Tombazis believes that changes made by the Italian team to their technical department and facilities have contributed to the Scuderia making a more competitive start to the season than in recent years.

A troublesome Bahrain Grand Prix resulted in Ferrari slipping back to third in the constructors’ championship standings behind Red Bull and Lotus, but recent reliability issues aside, this year's F138 has been one of the quickest cars on the grid in all conditions, confirming the feeling within the team that behind-the-scenes changes are paying off.

“We have made a series of changes to our approach in terms of our working practices and also from an organisational point of view,” said Tombazis, ahead of this weekend’s Formula 1 Gran Premio de España 2013 at Barcelona. “At the same time, we are improving our facilities and I believe we now also have a better understanding about how certain aspects of the car work.

“Putting all that together has enabled us to make a better start to the season than in previous years. However, the process is not complete and we feel we are only halfway through these fundamental changes and we continue to work on improving all these parameters, which, in the case of our facilities, includes the work we are doing on our wind tunnel.

“I think the new working methods we have adopted and the new structure put in place has allowed us to be more creative and this was one of the objectives we established along with (technical director) Pat Fry, to reorganise the place and to give people more time to think.

“We identified areas where, in the past few years, we were a bit understaffed, which meant people were under pressure and did not have time to think about what could make the car go faster. It is working, but there is room to improve still further, even though this aspect has definitely contributed to the improvement in performance that we have seen so far this year.”

However, whilst Tombazis recognises the progress the Scuderia have made, looking at the first four races he can see plenty of room for improvement:

“I think in general, the first results mean we can be reasonably optimistic about the rest of the season, with a sense that we can fight for wins and the championship,” he said.

“However, if I was to score our overall performance, I would only give it a 6 out of 10 and that’s for two main reasons: one is that we are not yet quite where we want to be. In the first four Grands Prix, we were not really able to fight for pole position and that is one of our main objectives at the moment.

“Secondly, if you look at the actual results, even if it’s true we’ve had a win (in China with Fernando Alonso), which naturally we can be very pleased about, we have also had two very bad results where we scored very few points.”

Like most teams, Ferrari will bring numerous upgrades to Barcelona. Tombazis was reluctant to go into specifics but said that the Scuderia’s upgrades extend to the bodywork, floor and wings.

“With any new component, the difficulty lies not so much in its development but in deciding whether or not it is working on track as well as we had hoped,” he said.

“Therefore, by Friday evening in Barcelona, our objective is to have a clear view on what we will take forward to use in the race, in the hope of seeing measurements taken from the wind tunnel confirmed on track.”

Barcelona, May 9, 2013. Banco Santander helicoptered the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 car over the sea to land it on the quayside in Barcelona this week. The flight symbolized Formula 1's arrival in Europe after the first four races of the season, held in Oceania and Asia in March and April.

The car landed at the marina in Barcelona amid great excitement after flying in along the coast, to give the impression it was coming from over the sea. As soon as it landed, a driver climbed in and started up the car as if he was taking it to the Circuit de Catalunya, which is where the Spanish GP, the fifth race of the season, will be held this weekend.

Massa je vozio nove djelove: krilce iznad bočnog usisa za zrak i ispuh pomaknut prema sredini i prema natrag. Alonso to dvoje nije imao, a oboje su imali novo malo krilce ispred reztrovizora. Sutra bi oba bolida trebala biti kao danas Massin
