Nico Rosberg says skipping first 2012 F1 test won't hamper Mercedes season

Nico Rosberg does not believe that missing the first official Formula 1 test of 2012 will affect Mercedes' competitiveness this season.

The team announced recently that it would not take part in the Jerez test on February 7-10 in order to spend extra time developing its new W03 machine.

But the German believes that taking such a tactical approach will pay off in the long term and prevent a repeat of the team's uncompetitive start to the 2011 campaign.

"It is just the choice that they have made and I am happy with that," Rosberg told AUTOSPORT.

"It is the compromise between testing early enough and having enough time to develop. And they need to find a middle way - and they have decided that that is the best way to do it."

Rosberg believes that the new technical structure at the team, including 2011 arrivals Geoff Willis and Aldo Costa, will ensure that a late start does not have a knock-on effect on the team's early-season form.

"With the way the factory is going now, I am confident," he added.

"This year we would not have managed to do the first race if we had run the car that late, but with the way the factory is now optimised, I am confident that we can quite happily make it happen and the car can race very soon after the first test - with just a few bits and pieces that need to be sorted out. That shows already that the team is a big improvement."

Mercedes GP remains confident that it has made the right decision in opting to delay running of its new car until the second pre-season Formula 1 test, even though it is the only frontrunning outfit to adopt such a tactic.

The Brackley-based team announced last year that its 2012 contender would only hit the track at the second test in Barcelona. At the time, it was widely expected other outfits would follow suit because of the extra development time made available by skipping the first test.

However, even though its main rivals in the end stuck to their original plans to get cars out for the opening test in Jerez, Mercedes-Benz vice president of motorsport Norbert Haug is sanguine about his team's plan.

"If you have half-a-year's timeframe to develop a car, then 10 days can be crucial," Haug told AUTOSPORT in an exclusive interview. "That was our decision. We want to test the proper car, finalised in each and every detail. That's why we need development time.

"It's important to point out that it was a conscious decision. I know that all of the other teams will be there with their car [at Jerez] but this is not unusual. Other teams that have been in a catch-up process have decided to go run first at the second test, so this is not a new event.

"We fully appreciate that the other teams have different plans and are ready at the first test. But we are not delayed, we are just following our process, and then we will see what the outcome will be."

Pre-season testing is limited to only 12 days, meaning that Mercedes will have just eight days to get on top of its new car before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Haug added that the team has big ambitions for the first test as well, with its hoping to put mileage on new parts and also get valuable data on Pirelli's new 2012 tyres.

"We will have a couple of parts to learn from at the first test," he said. "We can use the new generation of tyres, which is a good way to draw a baseline because you have the data with the old tyres to compare it to.

"We need to learn more about the behaviour of the tyres on our car."

dass das Team in Wahrheit mit der Erprobung eines hochinteressanten Technik-Tricks beschäftigt war. Genauer gesagt handelt es sich dabei offenbar um einen F-Schacht-Frontflügel, der auf den Geraden im Idealfall um fünf bis acht km/h mehr Topspeed bringen kann.

Nico Rosberg is expecting the new Pirelli tyres to play a major role in the type of racing in the 2012 Formula 1 season after his second day of running in the Jerez test.

Mercedes has brought its 2011 car to the first pre-season test with the focus on evaluating the new tyres and Rosberg, who ended today fastest, eight tenths ahead of the best 2012 car of Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, believes that Pirelli has achieved the targets that it set itself.

"It is going to have a big impact on the racing because the compounds are closer now," said Rosberg when asked by AUTOSPORT about the new tyres. "It is difficult for me to foresee how that will go, but it will be different.

"The [the compounds] are much closer together now. Degradation is still a big issue and the rear tyre seems a bit strong. Overall, Pirelli has done a good job."

Rosberg believes the data that Mercedes has collected on the new Pirellis during the test will allow it to hit the ground running when the new car takes to the track at Barcelona on February 21.

"It's important to understand the tyres properly because there are some quite big differences to last year," he said.

"It's a good thing because now we know exactly what the car does [on the new tyres]. We will have a direct comparison when we put the new tyres on the new car."
