Michael, how did you spend your winter break?

As always, we have been in the snow with the family and were enjoying the winter time. We just like to be in the mountains, it is cozy on one hand and at the same time you can be active in many different ways.

When did you start with your training regime again?

I deliberately had a break mid-december when I nearly didn’t do anything. But since the week after christmas I am in my daily schedule again, and I think I would not have made it longer without. My feeling is that the timing was perfectly right as I am totally on schedule. Saying that, I think the time until we can finally get back into the car is really long this year. My anticipation is growing with every day that is passing; and I am starting to become a bit impatient about it.

So what are you expecting from the season ahead?

It would be much too early to speak about any kind of forecast now. We have seen prior to last season that the truth is only on the pitch, as they say in football. The exprience from last year shows that you cannot judge the situation properly even after the test days in february. That’s why this year I really want to wait until after the first races. What I can say in any case is that all our programms go on full gear, that back in the factory there is no wheel not turning, that we all are working hard in preparation of the new season – and that I cannot wait to get it started.

Michael Schumacher says he does not necessarily expect Mercedes to build a car capable of challenging for the 2012 Formula 1 championship.

Mercedes is the only frontrunning team - and the only team other than HRT – not to bring its 2012 car to the first pre-season test at Jerez. It will instead run for the first time in the second test at Barcelona in less than a fortnight.

Schumacher, running therefore in a 2011-spec car at Jerez, says it will take time for Mercedes to work its way to the front and it is therefore not realistic to expect its 2012 challenger to be a title candidate.

"I don't think we can realistically achieve a championship car immediately from where we started last year, we have to build our way there," Schumacher explained.

"I am confident we can do that, but let's take it step by step. We work longer on our car, but if this was the only secret we should have shown all the cars later."

Schumacher, who set the pace on the second day of testing at Jerez in the W02, nevertheless backed what he said was a valuable unveiling programme.

"Our programme is done in a way we believe in," he said. "We made some very good work with the new tyres, which are certainly much better for a driver – they are more consistent and a lot closer to what you would expect from a Formula 1 tyre.

"Understanding those tyres was our main focus and we had a programme we did pretty well with."

Asked whether he still believed he could win a record eighth drivers' crown, Schumacher said: "Absolutely. I'm still around to fight for the championship. Whether we can or cannot do that is something to be proven this year - or whenever."

Michael Schumacher is positive about the potential of the new Mercedes W03 after his first day of public running on Tuesday.

The German, who had already driven the car during a shakedown and during Sunday's private test in Barcelona, managed 51 laps on his way to the sixth quickest time of the day.

Although Schumacher's session was shortened due to a hydraulic problem, the seven-time champion was pleased with how the new car handles.

"Reasonably positive," said Schumacher of his day. "It is the fourth day we are in the car and it's the first time we had a little issue with the hydraulics.

"It has good potential. I had a good feeling inside the car. It's difficult to say what that feeling is worth because of the rule changes, but the potential is good."

He refused to judge the pace of the car compared to the opposition, however.

"I don't want to be too precise right now, because I have not been able to overlay our running with the other guys and that is the important matter that can give me a direction, or at least confirm the feeling that I have."

Schumacher also said he had no concerns about the looks of the new car as long as it's quick.

"For us it's very transparent. The main point is that the aero numbers are good and there are different ways of interpreting the rules. We'll find out what is the better way. For us it's not really anything special. The most important thing is what we see on the clock and that is what I'm looking at."

And the Mercedes driver, whose contract with the team expires this year, said he is not thinking about his plans at the moment.

"There's no reason to make any statements or comments about my future. I will make a decision when it's the right time."

Intern haben sich die Silbernen längst darauf verständigt, Schumi einen neuen Zwei-Jahres-Vertrag bis 2014 anzubieten.
Teamchef Ross Brawn gestern zu BILD: „Unser erster Ansprechpartner wird auf jeden Fall Michael sein, bevor wir andere Kandidaten fragen.

Aber wenn wir dieses Jahr nach vorne fahren können, dann wird Michael sicher auch scharf drauf sein, die Vorteile in Zukunft einzufahren.“ Die Silber-Bosse warten nur auf ein Signal von Schumi.

Doch der will erst abwarten, ob er mit dem neuen Mercedes endlich um Siege kämpfen kann. Er hat Bedingungen.
Schumi zu BILD: „Wir haben uns als Team sehr stark verstärkt. Jetzt erwarte ich auch, dass wir unser Entwicklungstempo verbessern können.“ Und weiter: „Ich werde entscheiden, wenn die richtige Zeit gekommen ist.“

Fakt ist: Mit seiner Frau Corinna wird’s keine Probleme geben, wenn er weiter fährt. Fit genug fühlt er sich auch.
Echte Alternativen gäbe es für einen Renn-Rentner Schumi auch nicht: Wenn Schumi aufhört, wird er Botschafter der Marke Mercedes. Das steht bereits fest.

BILD meint: Das kann er aber auch noch machen, wenn er 50 ist...
Bei den Testfahrten gestern in Barcelona fuhr Sebastian Vettel Bestzeit, Schumi wurde Sechster.

Prava alternativa za " penzionera " Schumija ne postoji... Ako Schumi prestane sa utrkivanjem, bit ce savjetnik u Mercedesu. To je sigurno.

Na testiranjima, Vettel je imao najbolje vrijeme, Schumi je bio sesti.

ovakav optimizam sam samo kod rubensa vidio. mislim da nema ništa od velkog mercedesa, pogotovo od velikog schumija, a kako stvari stoje ni od velikog kimija. nažalost, volio bih da se bar nešto potrefi od navedenog, ali mislim da su ta vremena prohujala

Mercedes bi mogao biti solidna kanta, nesto tipa Ferrari prosle godine. Ako dohvati koje postolje ili jos bolje - koju pobjedu, mislim da je to sve sto cemo od njega vidjeti. S obzirom na godine i takav eventualni rasplet, imao bi odlazak sa stilom.
2010. je bio Rosbergova kanta za napucavanje, prosle godine je bio solidan u utrkama, moglo bi se rec cak i bolji u drugom dijelu sezone jer su izgleda neke stvari sjele na mjesto. Nadam se da ce ove sezone srediti i probleme u Q jer je najvise gubio i imao sudara zbog losih kvalifikacija. Jbt. Rosberg ga je guzio sa sekundom u tom jednom krugu

Mislim da su prošle godine osjetljive gume koje su se masovno raspadale išle iskusnom Schumiju više na ruku. Mislim da će ove godine opet Rosberg dominirati nad njim.

Ja misilm baš suprotno.
Gume koje su se (pre)brzo raspadale bile su Schumiju veliki problem, veći nego Rosbergu jer ih je u kvalama ili "spalio" u instalacijskom krugu ili ih nije dobro zagrijao.

Znam da je jednom prilikom izjavio nešto kao "u prvoj polovici kruga gume drže dobro a onda odjednom grip nestane i gume odu i tu nastane razlika"

In what could be his final season in the sport, do you think Michael Schumacher can finally get on top of the Mercedes?

I think, if he can get the car to his liking…the thing with Michael is that, when he was mega fast, he had a car which was absolutely dialled into his style of driving, which is a very unique driving style and none of his team-mates were really able to get a handle on the car. Now he is sort of at the opposite end of that. Schumacher can obviously still drive the car fast, we are only talking about a few tenths, but to get it to where he was dominant he needs the car to be setup in a certain way to be – with the front absolutely nailed to the floor. He can drive it that way, when a lot of other drivers can’t. But, obviously, understeer kills speed and that is a fact of what we do, so you always try to get rid of understeer at any cost –so what happens is that you try a little bit too hard sometimes and then you go even slower. So it’s a vicious circle.

Michael Schumacher concluded the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team’s pre-season testing programme today in Barcelona.



- Over 56 laps in the morning session, Michael worked through a series of set-up runs on the hard and soft compound Pirelli tyres



- He continued a similar programme this afternoon with further set-up and aerodynamic evaluations



- Michael completed 100 laps and 466 km today, his final day in the F1 W03 before the 2012 season begins



Since its debut, the F1 W03 has completed 4450 km of pre-season mileage over eight group test days, one private test day and two 100 km filming days. The team will now return to its factories in Brackley and Brixworth to complete the final preparations before departing for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

We are very happy with all the work we have been able to achieve, covering a lot of kilometres and learning a lot about our car which gives us a good basis to work from.

Again, what this means compared to our competitors is something I want only to go into after some races, as we all know that testing does not show everything. What we can say though is that the field is tighter than it has been, so we are looking forward to an exciting season.”

It has been a demanding period for everyone involved, and I am very pleased with the work that we have achieved and the progress that we have seen.



Over nine days of testing, Michael and Nico have put 4250 km on the F1 W03, and we have accomplished the majority of items on a very demanding test programme. There is a lot of hard work ahead back at base next week to analyse the results, however I am confident that we are in good shape for the start of the season.



As usual, it would be unwise to make any judgement on our competitiveness at this stage, and I will certainly refrain from doing so! It is going to be fascinating to see how it all turns out and I’m sure that this is going to be a very exciting season for the teams and fans. We are all looking forward to the action getting underway in Australia in a fortnight.”

Michael, what is your resume after the wintertests?

The car is reliable which is already good. The first impression was already quite positive. We were driving out of the box with the car and everything went well, so there is potential. We are heading into the season much better prepared than in the past two years, and we can fully concentrate onto the development of our car.

The car is reliable, okay, but is it fast as well?

The speed is promising. I hope we can show that in Melbourne. We were able to drive a lot during the tests and therefore learn a lot too, and we certainly have made a step forward. Just that I would want to wait until after the first races to jude how big this step is and how much it is worth compared to our competitors.

Why are you that cautious?

Because we have experienced last year that you can be very wrong relying on the data coming out oft he winter tests. And because we can see that the field will be very narrow this year. I do not have a clear picture yet. What we can say though is that the gap between the several teams will not be as big as it has been last year.

Do you have a chance to win in Australia?

Victory to me is unlikely, I see Red Bull in front. Behind them it will be tight, and you can be either hero or zero very quickly. It will come down a lot to the ability of how well you will be setting up your car to the respective track.

Your contract is running until the end of the year. When will we know if you will extend it?

That’s just totally unimportant at the moment, I don’t even think about it now. Now, it is all about focussing and concentrating on understanding our car, so that we will have a positive season. I will certainly not have me nailed down here.

For the first time in history of F1 there are 6 world champions competing, what’s your view on that?

That’s fabulous, as for a while I have been the only one on the field. This speaks for Formula 1, and it might guarantee for cool races and a lot of action. In any case, it makes me even more looking forward to the season
