Novinar Joe Saward na svojoj stranici kaže da misli da postoji mogućnost da Spa potpuno nestane iz kalednara:

In the F1 world, the Bahrain situation drowned out all other stories. The most important story for F1 was that Bernie Ecclestone announced that the French Grand Prix will be back on the calendar in 2013. It will be alternating with another race, but as far as I can understand it is not yet decided which race that will be. The original plan was for it to be Belgium, but there seem to be other problems going on there and the latest suggest I have heard is that it could be with one of the Spanish races. If that is the case Belgium will probably disappear completely, which would be a shame.

Pogledao sam nedavno ovaj film i moram priznat da je predobar! Stvarno, nešto što ljubitelji F1 i utrkivanja općenito nebi smjeli propustiti.

Pogledao sam nedavno ovaj film i moram priznat da je predobar! Stvarno, nešto što ljubitelji F1 i utrkivanja općenito nebi smjeli propustiti.

Ne... radi se samo o f1 u razdoblju izmedju '60 i '70-ih. Ja sam takodjer pogledao taj dokumentarac i toplo ga preporucam svima jer ima puno zanimljivosti.

FIA Institute testing forward roll hoops to increase driver protection

Formula 1 cars could be fitted with forward roll hoops in the future, if ongoing tests by the FIA Institute into increased driver protection continue to deliver good results.

As part of an extensive research programme conducted in the wake of the crashes suffered by Felipe Massa and Henry Surtees in 2009, the FIA Institute has already evaluated polycarbonate windshields and jet fighter canopies to see if they can offer better driver protection.

The latest tests have involved using a titanium roll hoop structure, built by the Lotus team, into which a 20kg F1 wheel is fired at 225 km/h.

On the back of mixed results for the shields - with the polycarbonate one shattering and the aerospace canopy flexing - the roll hoop tests have been more encouraging.

Andy Mellor, the FIA Institute's technical advisor, told the latest issue of IQ magazine: "The roll hoop basically did a very good job. It was able to keep a wheel away from a driver's head. We tested it both by firing the wheel down the centre of the car, and also coming at it from an angle."

The other benefit of the roll hoop design was that the impact deflated the tyre – which meant that it had less chance of being deflected further in subsequent impacts.

"The impact deflated the tyre during both tests," said Mellor. "We tend to think that's a good thing – it means that the wheel doesn't bounce as much. It stops much more quickly if you can deflate the tyre."

Although the first tests have been encouraging, Mellor insists that much more research is needed before the plans can be seriously proposed to Formula 1's decision makers

"At this stage it's almost pure research, which we need if we're to understand what the loads are in such impacts," he said. "We're not at all looking at final solutions as such.

"The work is absolutely exploratory and we are beginning to understand the mechanisms in order to protect a driver's head in this kind of impact. This is the next step in a very detailed process."

When the FIA Institute is satisfied with the results of its tests, and feels that one of the solutions will improve driver safety, then it will put forward its finding to F1's Technical Working Group.

Pirelli responds to fans criticism that tyres are too big an influence on racing

Pirelli boss Paul Hembery has responded to criticism from fans and drivers that the tyres are too big a talking point in F1 at the moment, saying that the situation will resolve itself soon and the tyres will become less significant.

He points out that the medium tyre used in the first four races, including Bahrain, was the largely same product as the soft tyre which was used in 18 of last year’s 19 races and was the most raced tyre last year. He argues that rather than the tyres, it’s the loss of downforce from the banning of the exhaust blown diffuser which is mostly to blame for teams and drivers struggling this year. “We are using it in a more aggressive environment than last year, such as Bahrain, for example,” he said.

This week has seen a flood of comment on this site and elsewhere following Michael Schumacher’s criticisms of the tyres in Bahrain. The 7 times champion said that drivers were unable to push to the limit on the 2012 tyres and added, “I just question whether the tyres should play such a big importance, or whether they should last a bit longer, and that you can drive at normal racing car speed and not cruise around like we have a safety car. I’m not happy about the situation.”

Hembery said, “In motor racing the only person happy is the winner and Sebastian Vettel had a different point of view. Drivers are under pressure; they want to succeed and if they are not then these things get said. It’s the same for everyone and it will still be true that the best drivers and engineers will always win. You drive within the package, If the package is limited by tyres, you drive to 100% of that package. If you drove to 70-80% of the package, as has been suggested, you won’t get any results. Look at Raikkonen, he’s been in rallying for two years so he’s suffered the biggest change and he’s got a 2nd place straight off.”

We’ve had almost 600 comments on this subject since Monday; over 4,000 fans voted in our poll and 46% agreed with Schumacher, with 33% disagreeing.

On Friday I put the fans’ comments to Hembery and he said, “At the moment, yes they are being talked about, but then again we’ve seen four different cars and drivers win the first four races and I’m told that’s the first time that’s happened for 30 years. I think if someone had told you that before the first race, you’d have thought that was amazing.

“Let’s see what happens at the Mugello test. You’ll see that the teams will work very hard on understanding the tyres. I think you’ll find that the tyre discussion will become less and less and the situation will resolve itself.

“We are at the start of the season. At the start last year there was a lot of discussion and you will find that two or three races from now we won’t be having this discussion. Because the engineers will work out how to maximise the performance on the car they will find a balance and a relative level of normality will occur.

“You have to bear in mind what we were asked to do. We were asked to create these challenges. If the sport wants us to go to a one change, zero degradation tyre we can do that as well. But maybe people have short memories, the sport was in huge decline no-one was watching it. There was no overtaking. We know that the majority of fans like to see overtaking.

“For example Bahrain, the last time it was run there were 15 overtaking manoeuvres, this time we had 73. To give you a barometer of where things have changed. We were only trying to what we’ve been asked.”

Lauda predicts Red Bull dominance to resume:

After Sebastian Vettel’s first win of the season in Bahrain on April 22nd, Red Bull could now maintain its grip on 2012, claims triple world champion and now F1 TV pundit Niki Lauda.

Red Bull has been the dominant force since late 2009 and 2010, and Vettel was untouchable last year as he successfully defended his drivers’ championship breakthrough.

But four different teams have won so far in 2012, and only the last of them were Red Bull and Vettel, as the energy drink-owned team’s superiority appeared to have waned.

After Bahrain, however, Red Bull and Vettel are back, Lauda told Germany’s Auto Bild Motorsport.

“In Bahrain, they got the car and the tyres right for the first time, and they won,” said the Austrian.

“They will have improved the car further in Mugello, so I see enormous potential for another dominant season,” he added.

Lauda acknowledged that the blown diffusers of the past seasons was Red Bull’s “great strength”, and now that is gone.

“Nevertheless, Red Bull is the team to beat,” he insisted.
