Tio Ellinas performs aero test with Marussia

Tio Ellinas, a member of our Young Driver Programme of Marussia F1 and current GP3 Series leader, debuted today at the wheel of an F1 car today when he completed an aero evaluation programme in the MR02 at Kemble Airfield.

21 year old Tio, from Larnaca in Cyprus, spent the early part of a damp and cool morning at Kemble familiarising himself with the MR02 race car before swiftly progressing into the main run plan. This comprised a full aero mapping programme with the evaluation of a variety of ride height settings as well as plenty of extra data logging to assist us with the correlation of our wind tunnel programme. We also experimented with some new options to aid our longer-term aero development programme.

Tio Ellinas: “Today was every bit as exciting as I expected it to be and a very special moment in my career. I will always remember this day I’m sure. I got used to the car and systems quickly and felt very comfortable quite early on. After that I had quite a detailed programme to work through but it was very rewarding to be doing testing that will be of real value to the Team going forwards. Now I can’t wait for my next opportunity at the Young Driver Test next month and I feel that the work I’ve done here will benefit me significantly for that. I’d like to thank the Team for being so welcoming and the many fans all over the world who have shown their support for the Team and for me today. It has been overwhelming and I want everyone to know that it is an honour to be the first Cypriot to drive a Formula One car.”

Dave Greenwood, Chief Engineer, Marussia F1 Team: “It has been a real pleasure working with Tio today at what is an important mid-season aero test for the Team. He has done an excellent job on his first outing in an F1 car and we look forward to seeing more of his potential in more representative circuit conditions at the Young Driver Test next month. We’ve had a good clear run at the day despite some damp conditions early on and this has enabled us to complete an extensive programme of aerodynamic evaluations which will yield benefit during the rest of this season and for our longer-term development. All in all, a good day’s work from Tio and the Team.”

nešto se spominjalo (neznam, ne pratim njih pa nisam siguran ako je bila kakva službena objava) da RB valjda želi sakriti neke svoje ideje pa da neće biti u Jerezu nego da će testove odraditi Toro Rosso, pošto od ove godine imaju i istog dobavljača motora.

Marussia's debut of its new Formula 1 car has been delayed because of a last-minute technical glitch, AUTOSPORT has learned.

The Banbury-based outfit had hoped to join the other teams in getting its Ferrari-powered MR03 on track for the start of pre-season testing at Jerez in Spain on Tuesday.

However, it is understood that during the final stages of sign off of the car at the factory, an unspecified technical glitch came to light which has delayed its plans.

The team felt that the problem was better addressed back at its base rather than sending its car to Spain and working on it there.

Team principal John Booth told AUTOSPORT: "While our car build ran pretty much according to schedule, we have encountered a small and frustrating teething problem, which we have been working to resolve back at the Marussia Technical Centre in Banbury.

"It makes sense to address this while we still have all of the equipment and technical personnel in one place.

"Our aim is to solve this issue as soon as possible and send the MR03 on its way to Jerez, where the team have set up and are awaiting its arrival."

It is unclear how long it will take the team to rectify the problem, but there is still enough time for it to transport the car to Spain and get it running later in the week.

Marussia has switched to Ferrari engines for this season, and retained its 2013 line-up of Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi.
