F1 rulebook needs to be simplified, says Ferrari's Sergio Marchionne

Ferrari chairman says the "myriad of rules" is making "everybody’s lives nearly impossible"; Suggests past dominant teams - including Ferrari - lost sight of bigger picture and tried to protect advantage.

F1 must strip back its current layer of “complexity” and make the sport easier to follow for fans, according to Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne.

The future direction F1 should take to increase its appeal continues to be a hot topic of debate within the paddock with moves afoot to make cars faster – by up to six seconds – and more aggressive-looking from 2017.

Such is the concern that the sport is not catering for what neither existing nor prospective new fans want, the drivers’ union has even taken the unprecedented step of commissioning a global survey to find out what people want F1 to be like.

Suggestions that the category has become too complex increased at the Canadian GP following the spate of grid penalties issued to drivers. McLaren’s Jenson Button, for instance, was handed a 15-place penalty for breaching the limit on two power unit elements for the season, but given the Briton was already set to start at the back of the grid after not taking part in qualifying, the sanction was converted into a drive-through penalty.

Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle expressed his dismay with the penalty system, tweeting: “Drivers lose track time/race results with engine/gearbox failures and also grid penalties, likely followed by time penalties in race. Too much.”

Calls for change have now been echoed by Ferrari boss Marchionne, who argues that F1’s rulebook is doing no one any favours.

“I like to see stands full of people, the highest number of spectators watching the sport and the sport to be a really interesting experience for people who are close to F1,” the Italian, who replaced Luca di Montezemolo in the Ferrari hotseat last October, told Sky Sports News HQ’s Craig Slater at the Canadian GP.

“The important thing is to remove the complexity that surrounds the sport, we have created a myriad of rules which have made everybody’s lives nearly impossible. You can speak to all the team managers and what they have to deal with in terms of the technical repercussions of any decision we make.”

Unusually, Marchionne even suggested that Ferrari themselves – who dominated the sport with Michael Schumacher in the early 2000s – were as culpable as other all-conquering outfits of recent years in trying to sustain their advantage through the rulebook.

He says F1 should now collectively “retrench” for the wider good of the sport.

“I think a lot it has been brought on by a defensive mechanism that is trying to protect people in certain positions, including Ferrari at a point in time when it was trying to preserve its period of dominance,” he said.

“It has been my experience running businesses that those kind of dominations always get taken out. We saw Mercedes come back last year with a vengeance; they have asserted themselves on the track which surprised Ferrari tremendously. But it tells you how feeble victory is unless you really manage it intelligently and I think we have gone too far. So I think we need to retrench, we need to go back to the real fundamental drive of the sport which is simplicity. We need to turn this into a spectator sport.”

Marchionne this weekend spoke out in favour of refuelling returning in order to spice up the show, but the Italian increasingly appears to be a lone voice on the matter among the sport's leading team figures. Although proposed by the Strategy Group, team bosses are thought to have rejected the possibility of its return during meetings in Canada.

Engine token row could drive Renault out of F1

Formula 1 risks driving Renault out of the sport if a push to relax next year's engine freeze is not accepted, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has warned.

As Motorsport.com revealed last week, Mercedes' rivals are pushing to allow in-season development to continue next year after the loophole was closed off by the FIA for 2016.

But with Mercedes reluctant to allow scope for its rivals to continue working on power units in-season for fear of costs escalating, there is the prospect that manufacturers like Renault and Honda that are struggling could face never having the opportunity to improve.

Horner suggests that such a scenario would be unacceptable for Renault, and thinks that Mercedes needs to think very carefully about what is best for F1 if it intends to block the rule change as it did 12 months ago.

Time to grow up

When asked about getting Mercedes to change its mind, Horner said: "They don't have to obviously, but the situation is we are at a precarious point in terms of Renault's commitment to the future.

"If you are effectively shutting that down in February, you are almost waving goodbye to them.

"So [Mercedes] need to have a bit of a grown-up think about it. And the FIA as well to say what is in the best interests of F1.

"If F1 can afford to lose an engine manufacturer, then stick to February 28.

Navodno bi se od 2017. VN Italije trebala održavati na nekoliko staza...vjerojatno jednu godinu Monza, drugu Imola, pa opet Monza...a postoji mogućnost i da se u kombinacije ubaci i Mugello

A Lotusov tehnički direktor kaže kako misli da bi trenutni mjenjači i PU koji se koriste u F1 kao i cijeli bolid uz neke dorade mogli vrlo vjerojatno odraditi cijelu utrku u Le Mansu

Red Bull, Mercedes, Lotus and Toro Rosso all took new designs to Canada, with the main modification being small ‘supports’ between wing elements

Jedan od nacina kojima FIA bi zeljela poboljsati spektakl je da se backmarkeri nemoraju odmah micat tako da priblize ove iza za fajt.... i onda se pitaju zasto je f1 u k****. Ja cu se ranit koje ideje :roll: .

Ali navodno je ideja odbijena od vođa timova

Stvarno glupo. Najbolje odmah kupiti b ekipu koja će blokirati protivnika. Manor se čini idealan, čak ni nemoraju glumiti previše.
Biti drugi znači biti prvi među gubitnicima. Ayrton Senna.

Čitam na GP1 da organizatori u Monzi rade na novom ugovoru sa FOM-om.

Što se ovih plavih zastava tiče, iskreno mislim da bi bilo u redu ukinuti da vozač mora propustiti bržeg. Ionako se sada kad to pravilo kao postoji i kada je propisano kako i kada se mora propustiti i koje su kazne ako se to ne napravi opet nema kažnjavanja kad sporiji zadrži bržeg. Ovako bi bar bilo konstantnije jer nebi nekad kažnjavali, a nekad ne. Pokaži mu plavu zastavu da zna da vozač koji dolazi iza njega nije u borbi za poziciju nego ga sustiže za krug, pa on hoće ga pustit ili natjerat da se izbori za prolaz. Funkcionira tako u ne-FIA-inim natjecanjima, ne vidim zašto nebi i ovdje moglo.

A mogao bi biti problem jer nigdje nije toliki novac i toliko politike u igri kao u F1. Nigdje drugdje ne bi nekome palo na pamet da svojoj B momčadi npr. plati ispod stola da štopa njihove konkurente koji su za krug brži.
Samo neka se trkaju.

Pravilo postoji i glasi otprilike da suci kažnjavaju vozača koji ignorira treću pokazanu plavu zastavu tj. ne kažnjavaju se prve dvije zastave - uobičajena kazna bi za to bila 10 stop and go kazna...a to što bi svi već nakon prve željeli biti ispred ovisi o fairplayu/prijateljstvu pojedinog vozača i momčadi...ne da mi se kopati po povijesti ali se baš ne sjećam da je u dogledno vrijeme neki vozač ignorirao tri zastave...možda zato nisi vidio kazne...a iskreno mislim da je to pravilo jedno od rijetkih koje je dobro i bilo bi poprilično glupo gledati kako jedan Manor ili Mcl zaustavljaju mercedes ili williams...imaš nekoliko staza gdje i nemaš apsolutno nikakve šanse proći bolid - i što onda Manor na čelu kolone a mečke se voze iza pa svi ostali...

Sljedece godine ce se predsezonska testiranja odrzat samo u Barceloni i to od 1-3.3 i 15-18.3. I Jerez ispada iz kalendara. Znaci nema akcije do 3. Mjeseca

počevši sa VN Belgije počet će se primjenjivati striktnija ograničenja na davanje uputa vozačima preko radija, a biti će reducirana i softverska pomoć kod startova.

Ajoj već vidin neku glupost. meni paše ovakav format kvala a za trku neznam što žele mijenjat? Samo da ne budu neki roll startovi i takve gluposti.

ne vjerujem da će bit leteći startovi sad kad su odlučili zabraniti elektroničke pomoći kod startova. To bi bilo glupo...otežat da bi par mjeseci kasnije pojednostavili

Trebalo bi napomenuti da će McLaren dobit dodatnu PU bez kazne.

i ubuduće će svaki novi proizvođač motora dok su ovi hibridni PU kao sada imati 1 ekstra bez kazni u svojoj prvoj sezoni u odnosu na starosjedioce.

Trebalo bi napomenuti i da je smiješno da guraju ove promjene u vezi pomagala vozačima usred sezone.
Već vidim kako će nakon Spa ili Monze jedan od Mercedesa opravdavati loš start tom promjenom pravila.

Mislim da bi neka promjena formata vikenda dobro došla (malo promiješati FP-ove, tipa produžiti fp3, pa staviti samo jedan u petak ili nešto slično), ali nisam za dvije utrke jer bi to onda bile kraće utrke (neće svim gledateljima dobro pasti kvalifikacije i 300km utrka u jednom danu, dok će sljedećeg dana biti druga 300km utrka),oni bi tu vjerojatno ubacili i neki reverse grid (također, nisam za to), i na kraju bi imali 40 utrka u sezoni.
To ima smisla u DTM-u i u ovim nižim serijama tipa gp2, gp3, wsr koji voze 8-9 vikenda u sezoni
