McLaren unveiled a highly complex pit stop light system in Barcelona during the third pre-season test, which they hope will gain them extra tenths during stops.
Whilst light systems are common place up and down the grid, with the likes of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes using them in 2011, the system adopted by McLaren is far more complex.
The team have traditionally used the so called 'lollipop' to stop and release its drivers. But with quick stops becoming increasingly important, teams have been looking at ever increasingly complex ways to speed them up.
McLaren's system uses 28 LED's to feed information to the driver and the two jackmen at the front and rear of the car. The driver simply sees a green or red light, telling him when to hit the accelerator. The rear jack-man also sees two lights, whilst the front jack-man and chief mechanic see a panel of 16 lights. When each mechanic has finished his part of the stop, he hits a button which activates a green light. When all the lights are green, the car is released.

Programme
First day of the final pre-season test and the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team continues preparations ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, running Jenson (Thur/Sat) and Lewis (Fri/Sun) at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.
The team is planning on gradually introducing a suite of new components to the MP4-27 during this test. Focus for the opening two days will primarily be on pitstop practice with a full race crew and further race prove-outs – including some more time-consuming set-up work. The back-end of the test will be spent focusing on analysing and learning about our race-one aerodynamic package.
Team manager David Redding said: “Having completed more than 2000km at Barcelona last week, today was always going to be more about quality than quantity. We wanted to drill a little deeper into our understanding of the car, and that meant undertaking some bigger set-up changes that wouldn’t ordinarily be available to us during a grand prix weekend.
“We made good progress and we’re satisfied with today’s results.”
“Today was all about testing set-up. It was a good day: we learned quite a lot and improved a few things. We didn’t get a lot of mileage, as we had a lot of downtime inbetween changes.
“Our car feels better set-up wise, we still haven’t added the new aero package – so I think we’ll get a better picture of what the car will be like in Australia over the next two days. But I definitely feel like we have a competitive car.
“This year’s winter testing has been way better than last year. I’ve not had any problems, we’ve ironed out a lot of issues and I feel very comfortable. I’m fit and ready for Melbourne.”

Uz te probleme i onu kišu, Button jedino nije zadovoljan s činjenicom da je odvezao malo krugova. A nove stvarčice trebaju odradit svoje kilometre. Po njegovim izjavama, poprilično su zadovoljni s onim što su napravili. Mislim da bi mogao, ali to bi na neki način umanjilo šanse za osvajanje vozačkog. Kod McLarena je razlika u kvaliteti vozača najmanja u odnosu na ostale top momčadi. Na stazama koje McLarenu budu odgovarale Lewis i Jenson će skupljati puno bodova McLarenu, ali će ih otimati jedan drugom. S druge strane RBR i Ferrari gdje budu dobri njihove prve perjanice će uzimati više bodova od timskog kolege (osim u nepredviđenim okolnostima). Sama ovakva filozofija McLarena sa dva top vozača u postavi smanjuje šanse bilo kojem od njih za osvajanje naslova.
